Vatican protests the Nobel for Professor Robert Edwards
Written by Cecilia

What issue that can provoke Vatican to take such action against it? Guess what? It’s the issue of ‘human creation’.
Professor Robert Edwards, the pioneer of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), is awarded 2010’s Medical Nobel. It has been 32 years since the idea of IVF firstly introduced to public by Professor Robert Edwards in 1978. The Medical Nobel is given to Professor Robert Edwards for he has helped so many infertile families to have babies, and keep giving them hope. Since 1978, four-million babies have come to the world through this procedure.
IVF is a procedure to have fertilization (sperm meets egg) outside a woman’s body, and when the fertilization succeed, the embryo will be injected into the woman’s womb. And then she can give birth to the child. Nobel Committee considers this procedure a masterpiece for the new era of modern medication. Therefore Professor Robert Edwards is awarded the Medical Nobel 2010.

So if IVF is good for humankind, why Vatican protested this procedure? Well, Vatican considers IVF is the main cause of embryo trading and disposal. Sometimes, successful embryos are sold to infertile women who aren’t the real mother of the embryo. And if the IVF procedure fails, the incomplete embryo will be disposed. The Vatican considers embryo is a living creature, therefore failing the project is equal with committing murder.
Through International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations, Vatican has announced that they were so surprised of the Nobel committee’s decision. So what do you think? I personally disagree with the Vatican. What Professor Robert Edwards has invented, is a genius procedure that has brought happiness to the world for 32 years. If embryo trading and disposal keep happening, they are the proofs of ‘human error’. Well, nobody is perfect!
